Project Based Learning and Summer School - The Best Summer School Program we can think of (but we are biased)

The State of Wyoming had the foresight to support the Middle School in Powell, Wyoming to try something different. After all, if students have not succeeded in 180 days of regular school, isn't summer school an opportunity to try something different? Powell has the good fortune of being near Yellowstone National Park, so their Driving Question was "How will Yellowstone Park's response to the Hot Button issues of today affect the park 20 years from today?" They combined a skills based morning with a technology class afternoon which focused on their driving question. They created websites to show their work, and had parents come in for a restaurant style presentation day, like the old fashioned dinner/movie houses.

We at PBL associates think that summer school is one of the Trojan Horse opportunities to change a school 'from within.'
